MELBOURNE, Jan 2 AAP - Police have charged one man and released four who were arrested after gunshots were fired at an apartment in Melbourne on Thursday.

Large numbers of heavily armed police stormed the Quest apartments in Park Street, South Melbourne, just south of Melbourne's CBD at about 2pm (AEDT) on New Year's Day.

A 31-year-old man from Preston, in Melbourne's north, has been charged with possessing a handgun and conduct endangering life.

Critical Incident Response Team police arrested five people at the apartment in South Melbourne after responding to reports of gunfire and cordoning off the area.

One of them was carrying a .22 calibre gun.

It's believed the men, aged in their 20s and 30s and all from Melbourne's northern suburbs, had a two-bedroom apartment booked for several days.

The man facing charges has been bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on February 20.

The other men were released without charge.
